Godolphin’s Somerset House (c, 2, Hard Spun–From Afar, by Empire Maker) gave Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby a sweep of the first three races on Thursday’s Meydan program and jockey Colm O’Donoghue a double with a smart debut over 1600 meters. Drawn gate nine, the homebred was away alertly, but there was plenty of other speed signed on and that consigned the Godolphin runner to a five-deep trip down the back of the course. Asked to improve his position on the turn, he was able to slide up into second from the two path and was ready to roll at the head of the lane. Somerset House claimed the scalp of pacesetting Shillong (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) at the quarter pole, pinched a break and got home about two lengths to the good. Fellow juvenile Mazeed (Street Cry {Ire}) sat a good trip behind the speed, came out for the drive and rallied, but was one-paced in the final 100 meters. The winner’s dam is a half-sister to Darley stallion Midshipman (Unbridled’s Song) and to Fast Cookie (Deputy Minister), the dam of MGISW Frosted (Tapit). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. O-Godolphin; B-Darley; J-Colm O’Donoghue.
