A select field of five will take part in Kempton Park’s Boxing Day showpiece the G1 32Red.com King George VI Chase. The big clash that jumps racing fans have been waiting for but weren’t expecting to see for a few months time is the centre of attention as stable-mates Cue Card (GB) (King’s Theatre {Ire}) and Thistlecrack (GB) (Kayf Tara {GB}) clash for the first time on a racecourse. With no disrespect to the other three runners Silviniaco Conti (Fr) (Dom Alco {Fr}), Tea For Two (GB) (Kayf Tara {GB}) and Josses Hill (Ire) (Winged Love {Ire}), the race does look to be all about the Colin Tizzard trained pair. Cue Card, the winner of eight Grade 1’s so far, bounced back to his best to be an emphatic winner of the G1 Betfair Chase at Haydock in November while Thistlecrack, the undisputed King of the staying hurdle division last year has translated that form to fences, never coming off the bit to land his three assignments over the bigger obstacles thus far. The fact that last year’s winner Cue Card is again seeking to safeguard the second leg of a potential £1,000,000 bonus should he also win the G1 Cheltenham Gold Cup in March makes the stable’s decision to pitch in the inexperienced Thistlecrack all the more sporting. Lets hope they all jump a clear round and may the best horse win.
