A pair of races later on the Tuesday program will have shed some light on the upcoming 4-Year-Old Classic Series, in particular the afternoon’s finale. A Class 2 going 1400 metres, it featured the Hong Kong debut of Beauty Generation (NZ) (Road to Rock {Aus}), runner-up in the 2016 G1 Rosehill Guineas when raced as Montaigne.

Sent off a well-backed 4-1 with Zac Purton taking the call for John Moore, Beauty Generation settled in the latter half of the field early on and made some progress while following the move of favored My Darling (Aus) (Mossman {Aus}) around the turn. The latter, in receipt of eight pounds from Beauty Generation, hit the front in upper stretch, dug in gamely and managed to last by 3/4 of a length over Beauty Generation, who just got his nose down for second (video).

“Given he was in need of that and they’ve run pretty solid sectionals, for him to only go down by three-quarters of a length, he’s right on track,” Moore said of Beauty Generation. “He’ll come on leaps and bounds for that and we’ll go to the Classic Mile with a trial in between.”

In that race, he could face My Darling yet again. Or maybe not.

“This preparation, in Class 2 he struggled a little bit, and probably today too, he struggled to win,” said the typically cautious John Size of the winner. “Maybe I’ll try him at the 1600m, I’m not sure. He’s by Mossman, and even though the sire can run that far I’m not sure that he will.”

Dinozzo (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}) entered a 2000-metre Class 2 Tuesday as a fringe Derby candidate and more or less exited the event the same way after staying on to finish second, beaten a half-length. Ground-saving a good bit of the trip, he was shuffled back and found himself in some traffic on the second turn. He got home well once into the clear while still a bit green and rallied, but just missed (video).
