CONSTELLATION (f, 3, Bellamy Road–For Royalty {SW}, by Not For Love) took a big step forward in the second start of her form cycle and second start for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, pulling off a game upset in the GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita. The chestnut earned a pair of stakes victories in the Furlough S. and Ruthless S. at Aqueduct last fall and winter, but was a dull fourth as the 1-10 choice in the Big A’s Cicada S. Mar. 26 and went unseen for over seven months. Resurfacing in the Phoenix S. for this barn Nov. 12 at Turf Paradise, she outclassed her rivals to get back on track with a 5 1/4-length score. Let go at 12-1 in this spot, Constellation was part of a muddled pace scenario early on before emerging to stalk the speed of co-favorite Finley’sluckycharm (Twirling Candy) through moderate splits of :22.24 and :44.58. The pacesetter appeared to rebuff Constellation passing the eighth pole, but the L N J Foxwoods colorbearer would not go away, continuing to fight and getting up in the final 100 yards for a half-length tally in 1:21.83. The winner’s dam is a half to GSW/GISP Kiss to Remember (Big Brown) and Puerto Rican champion El Viento (El Corredor).
