Bob Baffert will provide some intrigue early on Santa Anita’s opening day card, rolling out a pair of pricey first-timers in this juvenile maiden heat. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum’s DABSTER (Curlin), a $430,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $1 million Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-old following a :10 2/5 breeze, makes his first trip to post off an extensive worktab dating back to mid June. The chestnut’s dam, On a Roll (A.P. Indy), is a full-sister to SW & MGSP Ender’s Shadow and MSW & MGSP Ender’s Sister–herself the dam of this year’s GI Forego S. and GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. winner A.P. Indian (Indian Charlie). Dabster will be joined in the starting gate by stablemate Bronze Age (Mineshaft), acquired by Juddmonte Farms for $600,000 at Fasig-Tipton Florida after breezing in :10 2/5. The chestnut, whose second dam is GSP Winner’s Edge (Seeking the Gold), has also been in training since June. In addition to the aforementioned pair, Baffert will saddleRobert La Penta’s First Degree Burn (Pioneerof the Nile), a closing third behind barnmate and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Beach Bum (Arch) in a Nov. 6 maiden event that has produced three next-out winners at the level.

The parade of noteworthy juveniles from the Baffert barn continues two races later when BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS (Giant’s Causeway) debuts for owner Kaleem Shah. A $375,000 Keeneland September yearling, the bay was snapped up for $575,000 by Baffert at OBS March after working a furlong in :9 4/5. Her dam is a half-sister to GSW Shooter (Dehere) and MGSW & MGISP Forest Music (Unbridled’s Song)–herself the dam of GSW ‘TDN Rising Star’ Kentuckian (Tiznow) and sire Maclean’s Music (Distorted Humor). Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has won with a trio of impressive second-time starters in recent weeks and looks to continue that streak with Stonestreet Stables’ Princess Julia (Distorted Humor), a daughter of MGISW Folklore (Tiznow) acquired for $400,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. The bay raced in traffic early and made some belated progress to finish fifth on debut going six furlongs at Del Mar Nov. 12.

Winchell Thoroughbreds went to $600,000 to secure TAPSOLUTE (Tapit) as a Keeneland September yearling, and the gray debuts going long in this spot for trainer Steve Asmussen. The colt is the first foal to race out of 2010 GIII Delta Princess S. winner Bouquet Booth (Flower Alley), who also captured this venue’s Silverbulletday S. as a 3-year-old. Hailing from the extended family of 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace (Saint Liam) and MGISWs Riskaverse (Dynaformer) and Tonalist (Tapit), Tapsolute has posted six consecutive five-furlong breezes over the local strip on a weekly basis, culminating with a 1:01 flat (6/48) move Dec. 18. Machmer Hall Thoroughbreds’ Croce d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) is the only other first-time starter in the field, going postward for trainer Michael Stidham. The bay’s second dam is 1992 European Horse of the Year User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}).
